Abul Kalam Muhiyuddin Ahmed Azad was born in Makkah on November 11, 1888. His father Maulana Khayr Uddin was a religious scholar. The family moved to India in 1898 and settled in Calcutta. Azad started his elementary education at home. He learnt from various teachers including his father. By the age of fifteen he had learnt all the conventional religious sciences. Subsequently he started lecturing people. He was not comfortable with the hollow traditions and blind following and was given to critical thinking.
